Five of the Best Songs for Walking Down the Aisle

This is it… the first steps towards your next great adventure! You want to make sure the vibe is right. After all, the emotions will be flowing, and you want to simply glide down the aisle. What song is playing? Not sure yet? I can help with that. For today’s fun “Friday Faves” blog I have complied five of my favorite songs to consider for that all important walk down the aisle. A couple are traditional a couple are not, only one is not instrumental, but they all can make your day extra special, so let’s just dive right in!

5. I’m Yours – At the Piano (Spotify Link)

We all know and love the slightly reggae-pop feel of this very popular Jason Mraz song. Besides the title alone, lyrics such as, “And look into your heart, and you’ll find love, love, love, love / Listen to the music of the moment, people dance and sing / We’re just one big family” and “So I won’t hesitate no more, no more / It cannot wait, I’m sure / There’s no need to complicate / Our time is short / This is our fate, I’m yours”, can make it a meaningful song to walk down the aisle to. But the original is slightly fast and may feel a little too ‘jazzy’ for this situation, so instead I chose a beautiful piano instrumental version. This pianist does a fantastic job of keeping the integrity of the song while creating a tad more romantic, slowed down feel making it perfect for a walking pace and you will not have to time any lyrics to end at the perfect spot.

4. Pachelbel’s Canon in D – The Piano Player (Spotify Link)

No, it is not “The Wedding March”, but this is the song I think of when someone talks about wanting to play a classic and traditional aisle walking song. It’s the song that my mom always envisioned me walking down the aisle to, so of course when it came that time, I couldn’t say no. There are so many, many versions of this piece (believe me, I listened to what felt like a hundred before deciding on one for my wedding), but my favorite is the one by The Piano Player. I chose this version because the artist does speed the piece up a little bit. No longer do we walk down the aisle as a ‘step, together, step’ and some versions of this piece are so slow you feel like you have no other choice but to walk that way. This artist doesn’t change the song but makes it so you can walk like a normal person while still soaking in every moment and every expression on the face of the person waiting for you at the end of the aisle.

3. Somewhere Over the Rainbow – John Story (Spotify Link)

This is probably the least “traditional” (referring to both classic and modern tradition) song for walking down the aisle that I have on this list, but it’s definitely one of my favorites. “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” is not typically considered a love song, but it is considered to be a joyful ballad full of hope and optimism. John Story’s instrumental version of this song is composed off the 1990 remake of the song by IZ (who passed away in 1997), so while it is mostly a piano composed piece you will also hear ukuleles played throughout. I love the lyrical and upbeat feel that comes from this version while still being just instrumental, so you don’t have to worry about having any lyrics cut off or too much about timing. It is also a fairly long piece, so it is also perfect for the bridal party’s walk down the aisle as another option.

2. A Thousand Years – The Piano Guys (Spotify Link)

When The Piano Guys released this song in 2012 it quickly became one of the most popular songs to be played during that special walk down the aisle, and for good reason! This is an instrumental piece composed from the original version by Christina Perri, so while you don’t have the actual lyrics playing that make this such a great love song, between the piano and the cello the romance just oozes out of this version from the first note. With lyrics like “Time stands still / Beauty in all she is / I will be brave / I will not let anything take away / What’s standing in front of me / Every breath / Every hour has come to this” and “And all along I believed I would find you / Time has brought your heart to me / I have loved you for a thousand years / I’ll love you for a thousand more” I think it is obvious why this song is on most (if not all) DJ’s playlists.

1. I Choose You – Ryann Darling (Spotify Link)

Boy, oh, boy we made it here… my current favorite “walking down the aisle” song. And it actually has lyrics, which is not my normal go to, but this song was specially written as a wedding song (one of the lyrics is literally, “This is more than just a wedding”), so I think it is appropriate to recommend the original version. This would also make a great first dance song. However, the reason I am putting at the top of this particular list is because Ryann Darling’s lyrics read like vows… “You’re my always / You’re my forever / You’re my reality / You’re my sunshine / You’re my best times / You’re my anomaly / And I’d choose you / In a hundred lifetimes I’d choose you / In a hundred worlds I’d find you…” It makes me tear up just reading through them! There are also a couple different parts of this song that have longer musical interludes perfect for a fade out without interrupting lyrics, so just choose your favorite verse and off you go.

Well, there you have it my top favorite “walking down the aisle” songs. There are roughly 97 million songs in the world right now, so even though it was hard to pick just five, luckily the majority of those are not traditionally suitable for weddings.
