In the dictionary, next to the phrase “go with the flow bride”, if Maggie’s photo is not there front and center then the dictionary is wrong! In all seriousness though, I love working with couples like Maggie & Hans because when a wedding day is all about love and witnessing the start to a marriage, the rest is extra. And even if those “extras” don’t start out in the day looking like the original plan, the universe always has a way of turning things around to manifest the perfect ending. I could not be more grateful to have worked with such a wonderful couple.
I have been planning weddings now for 10 years, and there have only been a handful that have rattled me with logistics simply out of anyone’s control. This was one of those weddings. It may have been 40 degrees with 45 mph wind gusts and random 10-minute downpours, but I was sweating right through my two jackets and long underwear because of the stress the weather gods put on me that day. And please believe me when I say, I would much rather have been the one to shoulder that stress than have any bride constantly looking out the window or wondering if all her carefully planned décor was tornado-ing all over the field like we were in Kansas, but my goodness that took at least 5 years off my life. Didn’t phase Maggie at all though because she knew there was a team out there picking up every blown over vase, making sure all the tablecloths weren’t piled on the ground, and quite literally holding down a couple of the tent legs.
Maggie & Hans are two of the most kind-hearted and deserving people I have ever met. They knew they didn’t need an over the top and elaborate production to celebrate the next chapter in their lives with all their family and friends – after all they had welcomed their beautiful little girl into the world only 4 months before. I think they just really wanted a big ‘new-parents let loose’ party! Because, man, did they let their hair down and did they have a damn good time! I guess that is one of the pros to having family with some gorgeous property in North Idaho – there aren’t going to be a lot of “venue” rules to follow.
Moving past the classic Inland Northwest weather that no one can ever seem to predict, Maggie & Hans had a very special and meaningful pondside ceremony followed by dinner that may have been ‘catered’ by Birdie’s Pies (which were above and beyond delicious, btw), but was serviced by three family friends who are the true heroes in the dinner chapter of this story. These warriors reheated 150 personal sized pies in the house kitchen and continually restocked that dinner buffet like champions! Would not have gone nearly as smooth without their precise execution. Then after dinner was when the fun began for this very lively crowd. From GIANT bonfires with color changing flames (thanks, Amazon) to everyone and their mom (literally) doing keg stands to very competitive games of beer pong, ending with an absolutely packed dance floor for almost 2 hours. It was a party that the masses were ready for after the wind calmed down and the rain clouds went away.
Looking back at it now, all these things have become part of story of how Maggie & Hans became “The Wichmans”, and I would go through all that stress for them again in a second. Because when their amazing photographer, Aleks, sent me their gallery link and I saw the pure joy on both their faces, I knew those little details that I was so stressed over weren’t the things that mattered to them in that moment. Officially becoming husband and wife and being able to join together their adorable little family is what mattered the most! Please – hire the coordinator! I promise you will not regret that investment!
