I want to tell you about one of my favorite weddings from this season, Katelyn and Tyler. I met with Katelyn three times prior to her wedding date. And all three meetings were just with Katelyn. I did not meet Tyler until rehearsal day. This is not terribly uncommon as typically the groom has only a couple requests throughout the process but doesn’t take a hugely active role in the planning. That is exactly where Tyler was at… I was able to get a pretty good sense of his personality and what things were going to be important to him solely based on my meetings with Katelyn and her telling me what Tyler wanted.
One of the biggest things she told me right from the start that was important to Tyler (and her too) was to have plenty of “hang out time” after dinner. I put quotes around it because that is exactly how they both kept saying it. And this was important for me to note because it really dictated when we started the ceremony and how quickly we moved through the formal events to get to that coveted “hang out time” – my first draft of their timeline didn’t make the cut. This also told me something very important about the two of them… they wanted to make sure they had a chance to say ‘hi’ and (briefly) chat with every person who took the time to come to their special day. They wanted to make sure they had time to be present in the moment and with each other where they didn’t feel rushed or held to a strict timeline. They wanted to make sure to party and have fun before the music had to be shut off! I loved this attitude, and it truly made their day feel less stressful and more like a celebration where people were just enjoying other people’s company.
Speaking of attitudes, as a wedding planner who is there to make sure the day proceeds as expected I can’t tell you how much I appreciate a go with the flow, up for anything kind of couple. When all of a sudden we were no longer allowed to have a sparkler send off because of the extremely dry, summer weather – no problem – gorgeous flower pedal toss exit from the ceremony instead! When the groom decided to do a champagne pop with his groomsmen BEFORE the ceremony (see collage above) and got champagne all over her suit jacket – no problem – that is why you have groomsmen, so you can use their suit jackets in a pinch. When your photographer throws out the idea of wading into the water to get some dreamy sunset photos – no problem – YOLO, right? And she had her white rehearsal dress in the house, so it worked out great!
Lastly, I want to extend a huge ‘thank you’ to Katelyn because she granted me a lot of creative freedom when decorating her wedding and I can’t tell you how happy that made my little designer heart. She rented and used quite a bit of décor from my supply with only a half vision in mind. There were so many pieces that she would see and tell me, “I really like this, but I don’t know where to put it. Can you just make it all look pretty, please?” I would smile and tell her, “Heck yeah I can! That’s my favorite thing to do!” She would show me inspiration pictures with the perfect comment of, “I like this look, but it doesn’t have to be exactly like this – whatever you think will look good. I trust you.” Oh, those sweet, sweet three words! I was overjoyed at the opportunity to use my décor to help bring Katelyn’s wedding vision to life and I think it turned out pretty perfect, if I do say so myself.”
Thank you, Katelyn and Tyler, for asking me to be part of your wedding vendor “A-team”! It was not a job a took lightly and will always be a job I take great pride in. Looking forward to collaborating with many more couples on one of the most magical days of their lives.
